Werewolves VS Lycans
Werewolves and Lycanthropes. Same thing right? Nope. Though both creatures fall under the shape-shifter category, they have very distinct differences between them that do not make them part of the same species.
Werewolves
Werewolves are the more common of the two, since it is much easier to become a werewolf than a lycan. One can either be born a werewolf or turned through the transfer of werewolf saliva into the bloodstream, AKA a bite. Werewolves tend to blend into society and nature better than lycans. They can transform at will, and maintain their humanity even in their wolf form. However, werewolves have certain triggers, especially with new werewolves, that can cause them to transform randomly, such as high levels of stress and rampant emotions.
When werewolves transform, their anatomy takes on that of a regular wild wolf. It becomes very difficult to tell a werewolf from an actual wolf other than the fact that werewolves tend to be a bit larger. However, just like regular wolves, werewolves' coats and fur patterns vary from person to person, and no werewolf is alike. There is, however, ways that a werewolf can go savage, or what is commonly referred to as 'Feral'. This happens when a werewolf shifts for too long, or shifts on the night of a full moon. If a werewolf becomes Feral due to a full moon, they are referred to as Moonglazed. In contrast to the folklore, werewolves avoid shifting during a full moon for this reason, as the bright light of the moon triggers something in the mind that causes them to lose control. This is uncommon, but not unheard of. |

Lycanthropes
Lycans are the creatures that started the lore of the werewolf. These are traditional types of "werewolves" that you hear about, where it is a bastardized marriage between man and wolf. Lycans can stand upright and their anatomy typically reflects that of a human with wolf elements mixed in, such as digitigrade legs and paw-like hands with a wolf-like head. One can only be a lycan if they are born as one. This is the main difference between werewolves and lycans, as a bite from a lycan will result in nothing more than a large wound.
Lycans, when fully grown and standing upright, can reach up to ten feet tall or higher. They are extremely powerful, harboring heavy muscle and long fangs than can do a lot of damage. Lycans have no control over when they transform. Like werewolves, their main triggers seem to be strong emotions, which will cause them to suddenly shift. Usually, lycans will shift when the sun goes down, and the transformation lasts through the night. During this time, lycans have no memory of who they were and have no human thoughts. However, if reminded enough, a lycan will be gentle with those that it calls friends when it is in its human form. The Insolents take part in a forbidden practice within the lycan community, which is cannibalism. This contributes to the cult becoming complete savages. Feeding on their own kind is the main cause for a lycan to go Feral, and once a lycan becomes Feral their mind and body begin failing. They have a one-track mind, which is kill or be killed. They begin becoming thin and lose their fur, becoming more and more grotesque. Once lycans lose the ability to transform back into a human, they are forever gone and have no hope. |
